Purpose, Audience, Authors, and Acknowledgements

All adults may eventually require the following immunizations: influenza, pneumococcal, and tetanus. Adults may require the following immunizations: hepatitis B, hepatitis A, human papilloma virus, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and meningoccoccal. This self-study activity provides information on priority populations, initial vaccination, and revaccination regarding each of these common immunizations for adults.
The 2007 revision adds:
- Gardasil® (the human papillomavirus vaccine) has been recommended for women ≤26 years except in pregnancy.
- Influenza vaccine is recommended for adults who are close contacts of children aged 0-59 months rather than 0-23 months.
- A second dose of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine is recommended for mumps protection in certain age groups and with certain risk factors.
- Tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine has been added for one dose, one time for adults 64 and younger in place of one dose of Tetanus diptheria, adult (Td). In pregnancy, use Td only.
- The definition of immunity to varicella has been clarified and two doses of varicella vaccine recommended for all adults without evidence of immunity.
- In anticipation of the use of Zostavax ® (varicella zoster vaccine) for those ≥60 years within the next year, Varivax ® (chicken pox vaccine) is recommended only for persons up to age 60 years.

This self-study activity is appropriate for primary care clinicians and other health care providers providing preventive health care for adults.
